The process of relief sculpture is difficult. Many of the world's renowned sculptors have found relief sculpture to be frustrating. I have been sculpting portraits of human subjects in relief for over 20 years. Every relief sculpture I attempt, I say to myself, "Now I understand". In reality, my understanding remains incomplete."

About Jim Franklin

Jim Franklin has been sculpting since 1980, and has completed many private and public commissions; including several full round bronze portrait busts of prominent individuals. In addition, many limited edition pieces of varied subject matter are in private and public collections. The majority of his work is cast in bronze using the age old "Lost Wax Bronze Process." His primary sculptural interests are in full round and bas relief portrait commissions and life size human and animal figures.
In November of 2004, Jim installed a seven piece life size sculpture at the Choctaw County Library in Hugo, OK. Another life size sculpture containing 6 pieces is installed at the College of Veterinary Medicine on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. A larger than life size Bald Eagle resides in the foyer of the Builders Association of Metropolitan Tulsa in Tulsa, OK.

This year he has been honored by being selected for several commissions. These include a life size portrait bust of Langston University's current president Dr. JoAnn Haysbert, a 6.5' bronze relief of football coach Barry Switzer for the Barry Switzer Center on the OU campus in Norman, life and one half portrait busts of the Waner bother for Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, and a life an one half full figure of OU's Heisman winner Billy Simms, to be installed on the OU campus in Norman
Jim has been sculpting bas-relief portraits and other subject matter for approximately 20 years. These reliefs appear on memorial, commemorative and dedication plaques installed on and in public and private facilities in almost every state and several foreign countries. A project sponsored by Conoco, is installed at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. The installation consists of a series of plaques containing the relief portraits of approximately 64 "Oil Men of Oklahoma," including E.W. Marland, Sam Noble, and Frank Phillips. In addition, his relief portraits appear in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Davey Allison Texaco Havoline Walk of Fame in Talladega, AL.
Jim Franklin received his sculpture education by attending many weeklong and weekend, sculpture workshops conducted by prominent figurative sculptors. These include Paul Moore, Bruno Lucchesi, Richard McDonald, Blair Buswell, Lincoln Fox, Eugene Daub, Sandy Scott, George Lundeen, Tuck Langland, Anthony Antonios, Simon Kogan, Phillipe Faraute, Rosalind Cook and Gary Hale. Conducted at the Scottsdale Artists School in Scottsdale, AZ, Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, Loveland, CO, Brookgreen Gardens, Murrels Inlet, SC and through the auspices of The Oklahoma Sculpture Society, these workshops have been invaluable in honing his sculpture skills. Jim conducts sculpture workshops for individuals and organizations including Multi-Arts Center in Stillwater, OK, the Oklahoma Sculpture Society, Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma City and his studio on the square in Perry, OK.
