Soapstone is a form of talc called steatite that has been used for thousands of years by many. The beauty of the stone and its unique natural properties made it very attractive to Native Americans from the east and west coast, who travelled great lengths in canoes from the mainland to obtain this stone. The name it's derived from its "soapy" feel and softness. Utilized and applied to daily lives as early as the Late Archaic Period (3,000 to 5,000 years ago) for cooking slabs, smoking pipes and ornaments. Soapstone has natural properties of heat conduction and retention and can resist temperatures of 1000°C.
